The Gotland Pony (or Gotland Rus) is a breed of pony originally believed to have descended from Tarpans that lived on the island Gotland off the coast of Sweden. Today, the breed is bred mostly in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and more recently, North America. The Gotland on average stands about 12.2 hh, and they can have coats of black, bay, chestnut, buckskin, and palomino (dun, gray, and most pintos are not allowed). Gotland have an excellent disposition and rarely bite, kick, spook, or are in general nervous. They are truly a "small horse" and their versatility makes them an excellent choice for a children's mount, though they can easily carry up to 150 lb adults with no problem. They usually have a narrow, light build though they definitely show a resemblance to their wild Tarpan ancestors. They excel at harness racing, show jumping, eventing, and dressage, or just as a a child's all-around or trail pony. They are quick and intelligent learners, and very friendly.
